Learning Journey

Key Stage 1&2 (Years 1–6)

At this stage, the focus is on building awareness, curiosity, and strong foundations for future learning. Students are encouraged to explore the world around them and develop a love for learning through engaging and meaningful experiences.

Career awareness is introduced in an age-appropriate way through classroom activities such as themed learning (for example, “People Who Help Us”), storytelling, role play, and community-based learning. These experiences help students understand different professions and develop early aspirations.

Alongside this, students build essential academic skills such as literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking, which form the basis for future development. Regular communication between teachers and parents supports students’ progress, while opportunities for project-based learning, enrichment, and leadership activities help to develop confidence, creativity, and collaboration.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

As students move into Key Stage 3, the focus shifts towards exploration, reflection, and self-assessment. Students are supported in understanding their strengths, identifying areas for growth, and beginning to consider future pathways.

A wide range of opportunities is provided to expose students to different subjects and career fields. Assemblies, workshops, and career awareness sessions introduce pathways across sectors such as STEM, the arts, business, and public services.

Students benefit from subject enrichment activities, themed events, competitions, and career talks that highlight how classroom learning connects to real-world opportunities. Structured guidance and tutor discussions support students in making informed IGCSE option choices, while older students often share insights into their own subject selections and experiences.

Parents are also supported through guidance sessions to ensure that both students and families are confident in making well-informed decisions.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

During Key Stage 4, students are guided through important decision-making processes related to their academic and career pathways. The focus is on planning for the future and understanding the link between academic performance and post-16 opportunities.

Students receive individual academic and career counselling, helping them choose GCSE subjects that align with their interests and career aspirations. Further guidance is provided to support A Level subject selection, ensuring that choices are aligned with university and career goals.

A range of workshops is delivered to develop key skills such as communication, leadership, time management, and problem-solving. Student surveys are used to better understand aspirations and provide personalised support.

Students also benefit from engagement with universities, career fairs, and industry professionals, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of higher education requirements and future career opportunities.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12–13)

In the Sixth Form, students receive comprehensive and personalised support in preparation for university and future careers. The focus is on ensuring that every student is well prepared for higher education, employment, or alternative pathways.

Students are supported through one-to-one guidance sessions to explore university options, course selection, and career aspirations. Dedicated support is provided for application processes, including UCAS, Common App, and other international systems.

Workshops are organised to support personal statement writing, CV development, interview preparation, and career planning. Students are also guided through entrance exams, language requirements, and competitive admissions processes where required.

Opportunities for work experience, internships, volunteering, and community service enable students to gain practical exposure and develop essential skills. Interaction with university representatives, industry professionals, and alumni provides valuable insights and networking opportunities.

Parents are actively involved through information sessions designed to support them in guiding their child’s university and career decisions, including scholarship applications and financial planning.

Working Together

Our Careers and Academic Guidance Programme is supported by a strong partnership between the school, students, and families.

School Leadership ensures that the programme is well structured, resourced, and continuously reviewed to meet the evolving needs of students and the demands of the global job market.

Teachers play a key role in embedding career learning within lessons, supporting student development, and identifying opportunities for further guidance or challenge.

The Careers and Academic Guidance Team leads the delivery of the programme, providing personalised counselling, organising workshops, university visits, and career events, and supporting all aspects of university applications and documentation. Strong links with universities, industries, and local organisations help provide real-world insights and opportunities.

Parents and Guardians are actively encouraged to participate in discussions and support their child in exploring pathways and making informed decisions.

Students are expected to take an active role in their own development by engaging fully with guidance opportunities, seeking advice, and exploring the options available to them.

Supporting Every Student

We are committed to ensuring that our Careers Programme is inclusive and accessible to all students, regardless of background, gender, or ability. Targeted support is provided for those with additional needs to ensure that every learner has access to opportunities and guidance.

Continuous Review

The Careers and Academic Guidance Programme is regularly reviewed by the school leadership and Careers Team to ensure its effectiveness, relevance, and alignment with changing educational pathways and global career trends.

Feedback from students, parents, and staff is used to inform improvements, and key indicators such as student outcomes, university placements, and alumni success are monitored to evaluate impact.
