Curriculum Overview
Delivering Excellence through the National Curriculum for England
At The Winchester School, we offer a world-class education founded on the National Curriculum for England (NCfE)—one of the world's most respected and internationally recognised curricula. Carefully adapted to meet the needs of our diverse international community in Dubai, our curriculum combines academic excellence with innovation, inclusion, and personalised learning, empowering every student to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.
From the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Sixth Form (Year 13), our curriculum provides a seamless and progressive learning journey that develops knowledge, skills, character, and a lifelong love of learning. Every stage builds purposefully on the previous one, ensuring continuity, challenge, and meaningful progression while recognising that every learner's journey is unique.
A Broad, Balanced and Future-Focused Curriculum
The National Curriculum for England provides a broad, balanced and ambitious education that develops deep subject knowledge alongside the essential competencies required for success in the 21st century.
Our curriculum inspires students to become:
- Confident and independent learners
- Critical and creative thinkers
- Effective communicators and collaborators
- Curious researchers and problem-solvers
- Responsible digital citizens
- Compassionate global citizens
- Innovative leaders and lifelong learners
Learning is enriched through meaningful connections across subjects, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in authentic contexts while developing creativity, resilience, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity.
A Fully Inclusive and Highly Personalised Learning Experience
At The Winchester School, we believe that every learner is unique and deserves the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Our curriculum is designed to be fully inclusive, ensuring that every student—regardless of their starting point, learning profile, abilities, interests, or aspirations—is supported, challenged, and inspired to succeed.
Through adaptive teaching, personalised learning pathways, and evidence-informed practice, our teachers tailor learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of every learner. Appropriate support, challenge, intervention, and enrichment ensure that all students make excellent progress while developing confidence, independence, and a genuine love of learning.
Our personalised approach is underpinned by a robust assessment framework that combines:
- Continuous formative and summative assessment
- GL Assessments, including New Group Reading Test (NGRT), Cognitive Ability Test CAT4, Progress Tests in English, Mathematics and Science, and Pupils’ attitude towards Self and School (PASS)
- National and international benchmark assessments, including Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), where applicable, to benchmark student achievement against global standards and inform continuous school improvement.
By triangulating assessment evidence, teachers develop a comprehensive understanding of each learner's strengths, progress, wellbeing, and potential, enabling responsive teaching and personalised learning that empowers every student to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
Innovation Through AI, Technology and STEAM
As a future-focused British curriculum school, we embrace innovation to enhance teaching and learning while ensuring that meaningful relationships, creativity, and critical thinking remain at the heart of every classroom.
Technology is seamlessly integrated across the curriculum to create engaging, collaborative, and personalised learning experiences. Students develop the confidence and digital fluency to use technology responsibly, creatively, and purposefully.
Our curriculum incorporates:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enhanced learning to personalise learning experiences, provide adaptive feedback, and strengthen creativity, research, and problem-solving skills.
- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning that encourages innovation, design thinking, engineering, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Computational thinking, coding, robotics, and digital literacy, preparing students for an increasingly technology-driven future.
- Interactive digital platforms that support collaboration, assessment for learning, creativity, and student engagement.
- Opportunities for students to understand the ethical, responsible, and safe use of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence.
By integrating AI and emerging technologies thoughtfully and responsibly, we equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and digital confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global society.
Experiential and Inquiry-Based Learning
We believe that children learn best when they actively engage with ideas, investigate questions, solve problems, and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.
Our curriculum is enriched through experiential and inquiry-based learning, enabling students to:
- Explore concepts through hands-on investigations and practical experiences.
- Apply learning to real-world challenges and authentic contexts.
- Collaborate on projects that promote creativity and innovation.
- Develop resilience through reflection, experimentation, and problem-solving.
- Make meaningful connections across subjects and disciplines.
These experiences cultivate curiosity, independence, and a lifelong passion for learning while enabling students to develop the confidence to think critically, innovate, and contribute positively to society.
Our Curriculum Pathway
Early Years Foundation Stage (FS1–FS2)
Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework for England, where learning is centred on purposeful play, exploration, and meaningful experiences. Through a highly personalised and nurturing environment, children develop secure foundations across the seven areas of learning while building confidence, independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)
Students develop strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, science, and the wider curriculum through engaging, inclusive, and personalised learning experiences. Teaching combines structured learning with play, inquiry, experiential learning, and technology-enhanced activities to nurture confident and curious learners.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)
Students deepen their knowledge, strengthen critical thinking, and become increasingly independent learners. Learning is enriched through interdisciplinary projects, STEAM, AI-enhanced learning, leadership opportunities, and real-world experiences that prepare students for the academic rigour of secondary education.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
Students broaden their academic knowledge while developing analytical thinking, research, creativity, and independent learning skills. A challenging and engaging curriculum prepares students for informed subject choices and success at Key Stage 4.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
Students study a carefully selected range of Cambridge IGCSE, Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, and Pearson BTEC Level 2 qualifications, enabling them to pursue pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
Pearson Entry Level Programme
Students requiring additional support follow the Pearson Entry Level programme, which builds confidence, strengthens core skills, and provides a supported pathway towards further study, vocational qualifications, and future progression.
Sixth Form (Years 12–13)
Students choose from a broad range of Cambridge International AS & A Levels, and Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diplomas, providing diverse pathways to leading universities and successful careers worldwide.
Internationally Recognised Qualifications
Students graduate with qualifications that are recognised and respected by leading universities and employers worldwide.
Our programmes include:
- Cambridge International IGCSE
- Pearson Edexcel IGCSE (selected subjects)
- Cambridge International AS & A Levels
- Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diplomas
These internationally benchmarked qualifications provide students with the academic excellence, practical skills, and independent learning habits required for success in higher education and beyond.
Preparing Learners for a Changing World
