At The Winchester School, BTEC is offered as a two-year programme, designed to match the academic rigor of IGCSE-level study while focusing on practical application.

Pearson BTEC Recognition in the UAE

Pearson is pleased to announce that the UAE Ministry of Education has officially included the International BTEC Level 2 Diploma in its equivalency framework. This qualification is now recognised alongside established pathways such as International GCSEs and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students completing Grades 10 and 11.

This approval marks a significant advancement for vocational education in the UAE. It reflects the nation’s commitment to diversifying educational pathways and preparing students for both higher education and future careers through skills-based, practical learning. Private schools can now confidently offer the International BTEC Level 2 Diploma, knowing it aligns with Ministry requirements for secondary education equivalency.

Student Pathways and Progression

Students now have the option to pursue the International BTEC Level 2 Diploma as a recognised route for completing secondary education. The programme emphasizes:

  • Practical, real-world learning
  • Continuous coursework-based assessment
  • Development of employability and industry-relevant skills

For progression to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to a vocational high school certificate), students must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of BTEC Level 3 Diploma (minimum 120 credits, Pass grade or above)
  • Along with one of the following:
    • Five GCSE/IGCSE subjects (minimum grade E or 3)
    • IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)
    • BTEC Level 2 Diploma with a minimum of 480 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)

Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology

The Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology is a 480 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) qualification, equivalent in size to four International GCSEs.

The programme consists of at least eight units, including:

  • Two mandatory units assessed through Pearson Set Assignments
  • Core mandatory content (25%) ensuring foundational knowledge

This qualification is designed for students who wish to:

  • Study Information Technology as a one-year full-time course, or
  • Combine it with another subject as part of a two-year study programme, either complementing or contrasting their main area of study

The course emphasizes practical, coursework-based learning, enabling students to build strong applied skills in IT.

Progression Opportunities

The qualification supports progression to Level 3 (pre-tertiary) courses, particularly when taken alongside:

  • Other BTEC International Level 2 qualifications, or

  • Core mandatory content (25%) to ensure essential subject knowledge
  • Optional units totaling 540 GLH, allowing learners to specialise and tailor their learning pathway
